From The Ground Up: Gardening Edition

A few weeks ago I mentioned on the blog that Jep built a raised garden in our backyard. I decided I'd do a little segment every once in awhile dedicated to the progress of our little 8' x 4' space.   In these posts, we'll share some things we've learned along the way and what we would differently.

Below is what things are looking like as of today. Everything is still alive! :) And, we are actually starting to see some baby cherry tomatoes popping up. How exciting!!  Our regular tomato plant is also flowering so hopefully we'll start seeing some fruit on those soon.  The carrots and green onions were planted by seed and we are really noticing them coming up. For me, it's hard being so patient waiting on things to happen, but I guess that is why it is so exciting when you start to see your seeds sprouting and veggies appearing.

Check out the baby cherry tomatoes!

Jep also planted some beans in the corner of the yard from seed and they are thriving!

This week's words of wisdom from the new gardener: Cedar is expensive (but it does a last a long time) so it is a good investment in the long run. It takes a lot more soil then one would think to fill up a raised bed!

I also wanted to give a shout out to my co-worker, Bart, who has his own blog dedicated to gardening and canning.  If you're interested in starting your own square foot garden, hop on over to Head Space for more info and helpful tips!
